Beckley Foundation Latin American Chapter in Guatemala

In April 2012, President Otto Pérez Molina of Guatemala invited Amanda Feilding and the Beckley Foundation to establish a Latin American Chapter in order to advise him and his Government on drug policy reform. Since its inception, the Beckley Foundation has produced a number of influential reports for the region, including the Foundation’s initial drug policy proposal for Guatemala, entitled ‘Paths for Reform: Proposed Options for Alternative Drug Policies in Guatemala.’

In order to further high-level dialogue on drug policy among Latin American leaders, the Beckley Foundation has also held and participated in a number of meetings and summits on regional drug-related reform. Amanda Feilding proposed that a summit of regional Heads of State be convened in autumn 2013 to discuss the issue. The Beckley Foundation has secured participation of global leaders as well as George Soros and other international business leaders for the meeting, which will be chaired by President Jimmy Carter.
